Victoza – Pancreatic Cancer
Victoza (liraglutide) is a prescription injection medication for type-2 diabetes that was developed by Novo Nordisk. Victoza belongs to a new class of diabetes drugs called incretin mimetics, which work by mimicking hormones in the pancreas that regulate blood-sugar levels.
Possible Personal Injury: Pancreatic Cancer
The problem is that several recent studies have raised concern that drugs in the incretin mimetic class may increase a patient’s risk of pancreatitis. Over time, chronic pancreatitis is known to increase the risk of pancreatic cancer, and some studies support this personal injury risk.
In June 2016, the Leader clinical trial found 15 cases of pancreatic cancer in patients on Victoza, compared to only 5 patients on a placebo, out of roughly 4,670 patients in each group. The risk was low, but the study only tracked patients for 3.5 to 5 years. Pancreatic cancer often takes much longer to develop.
Dangerous drugs and dangerous medical devices can cause personal injury in up to hundreds or even thousands of individuals, each of whom may be entitled to compensation. A significant step in obtaining compensation for each individual occurs when the courts decide to group the cases under the supervision of a single judge who oversees investigation and mediation of the cases. Over 800 personal injury lawsuits involving pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer have been filed by people who took Victoza, Byetta, or Januvia. These lawsuits have been centralized in one federal court.
