History of Risperdal
Risperdal was first approved for use by adults with schizophrenia in 1994, but not originally approved for children or the elderly. Nevertheless, by 2000, more than a fifth of Risperdal users were children and adolescents. In 2005, the FDA issued a black box warning for Risperdal, the harshest label they can require. The warning specifically addressed elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis, citing a high risk for death, including from cardiovascular events. In 2000, the FDA approved use for autistic children in 2006.
As of the beginning of 2018, there were at least 13,700 Risperdal lawsuits in state and federal courts.
