Victoza – Pancreatic Cancer

Victoza (liraglutide) is a prescription injection medication for type-2 diabetes that was developed by Novo Nordisk. Victoza belongs to a new class of diabetes drugs called incretin mimetics, which work by mimicking hormones in the pancreas that regulate blood-sugar levels.

The problem is that several recent studies have raised concern that drugs in the incretin mimetic class may increase a patient’s risk of pancreatitis. Over time, chronic pancreatitis is known to increase the risk of pancreatic cancer, and some studies support this personal injury risk.

In June 2016, the Leader clinical trial found 15 cases of pancreatic cancer in patients on Victoza, compared to only 5 patients on a placebo, out of roughly 4,670 patients in each group. The risk was low, but the study only tracked patients for 3.5 to 5 years. Pancreatic cancer often takes much longer to develop.
